Faculty responsibilities are varied and will differ to some degree based upon the individual phases of the curriculum: didactics and clinical rotations. The following duties and responsibilities are designed to apply to all faculty within the Physician Assistant (PA) Program.

Basic Function and Responsibility

  • Prepare and teach assigned courses during the didactic phase of the program.
  • Advise a select number of students as chosen by the Director of Education.
  • Supervise and instruct students in assigned pre-clinical simulation labs and/or small group settings.
  • Assess and evaluate student performances on clinical simulation examinations.
  • Critique student assignments and provide prompt feedback.
  • Assist in identifying student deficiencies and assist with student tutorial/remediation efforts.
  • Maintain student records and do appropriate follow up on all correspondence pertaining to applicants, students, and course assignments.
  • Be a member of the Admissions Committee of the Physician Assistant Program to assist with reviewing applications, interviewing and discussions for selection and/or denial.
  • Assist with site monitoring for the clinical year students.
  • Attend and contribute to the weekly Faculty meetings and semester Faculty Retreats.
  • Participate in the ongoing self-assessment process and curricular development and revisions.
  • Serve as elected or appointed representative, in College of Allied Health Sciences, and university committees/activities.
  • Attend training and workshops to develop faculty in the area of educational technology and learning management systems (Desire2Learn).
  • Represent the professional standards as outlined by the physician assistant profession and by the university.
  • Engage in an agreed upon amount of clinical practice.
  • Assist in preparation of data for accreditation self-study documents.
  • Comply with the current edition ARC-PA Standards.
  • Assume other duties within the program when needed and feasible as assigned by the Program Director/Chair.
  • As advisor of a specific number of students, the faculty person shall meet a minimum of once each semester with the student to:
  • Review student performance.
  • Assess students’ readiness for the next phase of the program.
  • Provide opportunity for the student to verbalize his/her progress to date.
  • Provide opportunity for the student to clarify/express concerns/verbalize positive aspects of the program and the student’s role in it.
  • Meet with any student who has performed unsatisfactorily either academically or professionally.
  • Be responsible for completeness of the student’s file while the student is in the program.
  • Monitor the student’s progress during clinical year by routine phone/e-mail communication with the student if notified by the Clinical Director.
  • Bring to faculty meetings for discussion information on any student considered at risk.
  • Bring to faculty meeting discussion of any student needing additional monitoring or any other form of remediation.
  • Maintain complete and up to date records on student and student interactions in Box.com.
  • Meet with the student during the Exit Interview and review their Study Plan.

Responsibilities

All teaching and department support tasks to be performed successfully.

Minimum Requirements

Must have a Masters degree in Physician Assistant. Three years minimum as a practicing PA-C.

Required Qualifications

Must have and maintain PA-C licensure.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • General knowledge and proficiency in classroom instruction.
  • General knowledge and proficiency in clinical knowledge, skills and abilities to function in the primary care role.
  • The ability to develop and utilize competency based materials for physician assistant education.
  • Knowledge of the primary care role of the physician assistant.
  • Awareness of trends in educational methodologies for teaching clinical skills, and adapting these methodologies, where appropriate, to the program.
  • Proficiency in upgrading clinical skills and medical knowledge required to retain eligibility of certification.
  • Teaching, conducting student small group, precepting students, advising students, mentoring students, supervising research practicum for students.
  • Participate in service to the department, college, institution, and/or community.
  • Submit publications for acceptance in peer-reviewed journals. Present at professional seminars and conferences. Search and apply for extramural and intramural grants relevant to our program.
  • Participate in clinical practice concurrent with student instruction.
