Assistant Professor of Counselor Education

The Department of Communication Sciences and Professional Counseling in the College of Education at the University of West Georgia invites dynamic applicants to join our rapidly-growing, CACREP- accredited Counselor Education Program. The College of Education is a doctoral granting and SACS accredited, preparing graduates for professional careers in three dynamic areas of focus: Teaching, Leadership, and Wellness.  Located 45 miles west of Atlanta, the University of West Georgia’s 645-acre campus offers modern, state-of-the-art facilities complemented by beautiful green spaces. Position Description

The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities including (1) coordination of counseling initiatives and services in the Comprehensive Community Clinic; (2) teaching graduate courses in Counselor Education; (3) conducting meaningful research and scholarship; (3) participating in broad-based university, college, and departmental committee work and professional service; (4) advising students; (5) supervising students in field experiences; and (6) working collaboratively with masters and doctoral programs in the College of Education.

An earned doctorate in counseling or counselor education is required, from a CACREP accredited program. The candidate must be licensed/certified as a professional counselor in Georgia. Counseling experience in community settings is required. Candidates must have a strong identity as a counselor and counselor educator as evidenced by active participation in professional counseling organizations, demonstrated commitment to and evidence of a research and publication agenda, and knowledge of, and commitment to, the CACREP accreditation standards and process.

Desirable candidates will demonstrate excellence in teaching a broad range of graduate level counseling courses. The desirable candidate will have successful counseling experience in agencies, conducting meaningful research and scholarship, teaching graduate courses, guiding graduate student research, serving on doctoral committees, identifying and pursuing collaborative and entrepreneurial opportunities, developing and providing instruction through on-line or alternative methods, and developing collaborative relationships with academic and non-academic partners. Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in Counselor Education, from a CACREP-accredited program.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience working in counseling settings.
  • A demonstrated understanding of Counselor Education.
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with other faculty and practitioners to incorporate the professional counseling competencies into a cohesive experience for graduate students
  • Demonstrated understanding of assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and evidence of, a research and publication agenda

This is a tenure-track, nine-month appointment with the possibility for summer employment.  Start date for the position is August 1, 2020, pending availability of funding.  Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.  The University of West Georgia is committed to diversity.
