Job Description

The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering seeks a Director of Learning Sciences Research who has a strong interest in solving learning challenges in higher education.  This new position will focus on creating a design studies approach to further the continuous improvement of the department’s inclusive pedagogical approaches.  The successful candidate will work in collaboration with our faculty, students, and other stakeholders to create and evaluate learning interventions that will foster students’ inclusive leadership skills and promote their learning and success.

This is a full-time, 12-month non-tenure track academic professional faculty position with a combination of teaching (no more than one course per term), research on the scholarship of teaching and learning, and administrative responsibilities. Administrative responsibilities, representing roughly half the total responsibilities, will be primarily focused on the undergraduate programs with some synergistic activities that cut across both the graduate and undergraduate programs.

Major administrative responsibilities:

  • Play a central role in driving sustainable, scalable, and research-driving innovation in engineering education
  • Provide leadership in driving fast-paced projects that deliver tangible short-term results, in partnership with faculty /student innovation teams, while maintaining a long-term strategic portfolio of learning innovation projects
  • Incorporate cognitive as well as non-cognitive (i.e., inter- and intra-personal) competencies into pedagogical approaches.
  • Coordinate faculty development activities in reform-based and inclusive pedagogies

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in educational psychology, learning sciences, curriculum and instruction, engineering education, or related field
  • At least three years of experience in engineering education or learning sciences research

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Three to five years of STEM teaching experience in secondary or higher education
  • Demonstrated track record in publishing in peer reviewed journals is highly desired
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field
