About the College/Unit/Department

The Grady College celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015. The college is home to the Peabody Awards, the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) and NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism awards. In addition to its undergraduate programs, the Grady College also houses graduate programs offering M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees. The college hosts student chapters of the Association for Women in Sports Media, the National Association of Black Journalists, NPPA, the Online News Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. Position Summary

The Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Journalism to begin August 2020. We are hiring at the rank of assistant professor.

The department seeks a scholar to instruct our students in, and educate the public about, the use of data in telling stories as well as providing public accountability using data. The successful candidate will show potential for excellence in teaching and research on topics such as scraping data from the web, coding both for data gathering and for presentation, data visualization, and using analytics to evaluate story engagement. The person selected for the position will teach two courses per semester and conduct research in journalism and media-related areas. Courses may include data journalism, investigative journalism, and others in the core curriculum.

Additional Requirements

A Ph.D. in journalism/mass communication or a Ph.D. in another field or discipline that includes a stream of media-focused research is required. A.B.D. candidates who will complete their degrees by April 1, 2021, will be considered.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Preference will be given to candidates who 1) demonstrate familiarity with journalism practice and issues and 2) have at least one year of professional experience in journalism, policy, and/or analytics. Preference also will be given to candidates who demonstrate an interest in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, as well as an ability to engage students from diverse backgrounds.
