Position Title Communications Coordinator
Job Description Summary

Under the supervision of the Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Communications Coordinator assists in developing and executing integrated communication initiatives and conceptualizes, plans, and implements the College’s internal and external communications. Using effective communications, this position helps ensure the success of all programs and services for the College.

Through composing, editing, and managing the production of a full range of material including print, web, email, social media, and more, the Communications Coordinator effectively supports the College’s mission to proactively increase exposure and expand the ways students, alumni and friends of EGSC can become meaningfully engaged with the College.

Major Duties

• Write press releases, proofread materials/publications, compose graphs/charts, ensure materials are distributed to media partners and posted on EGSC’s web news feed
• Coordinate photography for college related events, including scholarship awards, honors events, sporting events, special events and other activities as needed
• Monitor the news reporting service for EGSC each morning and afternoon and provide necessary reporting
• Create graphic design elements as they are needed for projects and publications
• Post regularly on EGSC’s social media sites to engage with constituents
• Work with webmaster to maintain website content and graphics
• Maintain professional and cooperative relationships with media, community and college constituents
• Assist with all college publications
• Maintain updated media contact listing
• Help strategize with AVP and other Advancement staff to develop concepts, ideas and projects; keep AVP informed of any problems or concerns
• Maintain current info regarding EGSC on external sites, such as Wikipedia, Georgia Encyclopedia, and the EGSC Profile on the USG Website
• Perform related duties as assigned

Knowledge Required by the Position

• Knowledge of communications, journalism and public relations practices
• Knowledge and use of graphic design and related software (PhotoShop, InDesign,etc.)
• Skill in development of advertisements, press releases, and newsletters
• Knowledge of digital cameras, photographic composition and exposure
• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs
• Skill in analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions
• Skill in oral and written communication
• Exceptional attention to detail
• Ability to prioritize, handle multiple assignments, and quickly adapt to meet unexpected and urgent requests while keeping order
• Ability to manage appropriate steps to get projects completed by given deadline; strong ability to organize, plan, and execute a resourceful workflow
• Responds quickly and effectively to changing trends and circumstances; embrace change

Supervisory Controls

The Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement assigns work in terms of very general instructions with specific outcomes. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines

Guidelines include University System of Georgia policies and procedures, East Georgia State College policies and procedures, and the EGSC Identity Standards. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

Complexity/Scope of Work

The work consists of varied communications duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.

Contacts

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, alumni, students, business leaders, community leaders, the news media, and members of the general public.
• Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to motivate or influence persons.

Physical Demands

• The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table, or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
• The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility

May occasionally supervise part-time student workers.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field (journalism, communications, graphic design, public relations, etc.)
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of three years full-time equivalency work experience.
• Experience with Adobe Suite
• Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia.
