Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Music Theory

Be part of the growing School of Music faculty at Georgia State University, an enterprising R-1 university in Atlanta. Our next Assistant Professor in Music Theory will play a central role in the School of Music’s contributions to Georgia State’s strategic goals of highlighting the arts and media. The university views these as vital to the quality of all major cities and to demonstrating that students from all backgrounds can achieve academic and career success at high rates. Our faculty take advantage of the Rialto Center for the Arts, the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall, large rehearsal spaces in the Helen M. Aderhold Learning Center, Pullen Library and classrooms in the Standard and Hass-Howell Buildings for their research and for mentoring students. Faculty and students also benefit from Atlanta’s rich cultural arts groups including the world-renowned Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Opera, the Atlanta Ballet, the High Museum of Art, and a wealth of theatre companies including the Alliance Theatre and the Theatrical Outfit among many others. Opportunities for support include intramural research grants, summer funding, teaching release time, graduate research assistants, travel funds, and assistance in pursuing external funding.

The School of Music is part of the College of the Arts, which was established in 2016 and also includes the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design, the School of Film, Media & Theatre, the Center for Collaborative & International Arts (CENCIA), and the Center for Educational Partnerships in Music. In addition to offering some of the university’s most popular majors, the college connects faculty and students with Atlanta’s thriving arts scene and booming film and music industries.

Responsibilities

The selected candidate can anticipate teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Music Theory, engaging in research within the discipline, and participating in service at the school, college, and/or university levels.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree (or ABD)
  • Demonstrable success in classroom teaching effectiveness at the collegiate level
  • Demonstrable research agenda in the field of Music Theory.

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Demonstrable keyboard proficiency
  •  Experience with recent music theory pedagogy and pedagogical materials (textbooks, etc.)
  •  Aural Skills experience with movable Do solfeggio
