Position Summary

This senior level position is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for UHC and is the person responsible for overseeing the delivery of care, administrative, and clinical direction of medical, vision, and dental services. The role provides medical guidance for the occupational health program, the allergy-travel medicine service, and infection prevention control. The CMO is responsible to determine if, and when psychotherapy records are to be accessed for essential medical treatment of mental health patients whenever such release is not already authorized. The position ensures that the provision of care meets or exceeds Joint Commission standards and is responsible for the development of policy supportive of accreditation. The Senior Director collaborates with UGA faculty, staff, students and community members to advance the mission of the University Health Center (UHC) and the University of Georgia. The Senior Director of Medical Services is the designated representative of the UHC in the absence of the Executive Director.

Additional Requirements

Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy Degree. A minimum of five years of post-residency experience in practicing medicine in an ambulatory care environment. A minimum of three years supervisory and administrative experience.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current BLS and ACLS certification. License to practice medicine in Georgia. Current DEA. Board certification in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine is preferred, other medical specialty board certification will be considered in conjunction with experience. College Health experience is highly valued as is professional familiarity with accreditation standards (Joint Commission, or AAAHC) and the accreditation process. Additional education/experience, i.e. MBA, business experience to include HR responsibilities, Informatics, Public Health, or Health Care Administration is preferred, as is experience with coordinating disaster response and emergency management/health care response.

Clinical knowledge base, particularity primary medical care focused. Practical comfort with behavioral, travel and tropical medicine. Minor procedural skills. Communication skills, empathy, ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, tolerance and cultural competency. Facility with computers and technology with superior competency with specific software (Microsoft Office, Electronic Medical Records), understanding Data/Database organization, analytics, and methods of presentation to others. Must possess superior interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with multiple constituencies in a complex University setting

Manages human resources to achieve the goals of the department and support the UHC mission:
Establishes clinician staffing plan for Medical Services; ensures adequate clinician staffing daily.
Routinely monitors clinical care processes for efficiency and efficacy and is available in real time to offer clinical guidance or troubleshoot challenges that arise.
Guides the hiring process to include recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and orienting staff to ensure qualified staff are hired.
Ensures that credentialing, preceptorship, licensure, and orientation processes comply with Health Center policies and Joint Commission standards.
Provides a positive work environment that supports a sense of ownership by lead clinicians, clinicians, and other staff. Effectively coaches and motivates staff to achieve department and UHC goals. 
Conducts performance appraisals on a timely basis, and provides feedback that recognizes professional achievements and encourages professional growth.
Prepares annual salary recommendations for individuals reporting to this position. Maintains current knowledge of and follows UHC and UGA personnel policies and procedures. 
Determines medical records permissions and access for staff reporting to Medical Services.

Administrative Coordination:
Chairman of Medical Services Executive Committee and the Primary Care Leadership Team.
Participates in meetings of the Administrative Staff, Quality Council, Leadership Council, Executive Committee of the Medical Staff, Medical Staff, CAPS Leadership Team and Ethics Committee.
Provides medical support and consultation to Allergy Travel Clinic, Dental Clinic, Pharmacy, Vision Clinic, Laboratory, and Radiology.
Represents the University Health Center on University-related committees and University-related functions at the request of the Executive Director.
Serves as Medical Staff liaison with the local medical community.
Represents the Executive Director in case of absence.

Oversees the undergraduate and graduate medical education rotations.
Addresses work flow requirements to facilitate effective and efficient functioning of the clinical areas for which responsible. Adjusts priorities to meet changing operational requirements.
Provides consultation for faculty and staff.
Ensures that complaints regarding provision of medical, dental, and optometric clinical services are addressed on a timely basis and that appropriate follow-up is performed.
