Title:  Systems Administrator, Working Level
Job Category:  Staff

This position performs complex specialized duties in the design, installation and maintenance of systems infrastructure. This position designs all aspects of the server infrastructure from hardware through virtualization to automated Operating System and Application installation. This position performs a variety of other complex systems administration duties. This position generally possesses authority to coordinate work of the Entry-Level System Administrator positions and mentors these two lower level positions in specific techniques or technical methods for accomplishing work assignments for projects. This position may serve as project leader on special projects.

A successful candidate should have:

  • A minimum of three years experience managing servers and services in a production environment.
  • Understanding of architecting complex systems from the ground up.
  • Understanding of automating system administration tasks, preferably using Puppet.
  • Understanding of managing virtualized environments (particularly with VMware ESX).
  • Understanding of common services and protocols including HTTP, SAML, Git, DNS, TCP/IP, NTP, SSH, SMTP, etc.
  • Understanding of writing effective system administration scripts and utilities.
  • Competency programming in one or more high level programming languages.
  • Strong working knowledge of patch management and change control practices.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices for monitoring, tiered storage, backup, and disaster recovery.
  • Understanding of diagnosing Local Area Networking problems.
  • Understanding of managing a SAML Single Sign-On environment is a plus.
  • Understanding of managing complex web servers, including emerging web security standards is a plus.
  • Understanding of working in environments with Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database management systems is a plus.
  • Understanding of with high-availability design (failover systems and data replication) is a plus.
  • Understanding of managing SAN and NAS storage environments is a plus.
  • Understanding of managing a backup service is a plus.
Required Qualifications:


  • Baccalaureate degree required.
  • Over three years of related experience required.  
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Knowledge of data storage systems.
  • Knowledge of backup systems concepts.
  • Knowledge of database development and management concepts.
  • Knowledge of firewall and information security principles.
  • Knowledge of UNIX, Linux and Microsoft Windows server operating systems.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices.
  • Knowledge of system administration products and tools.
  • Knowledge of application protocols, advanced networking and multi-tier application architecture.
  • Skill in collaborating with multiple constituents.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to respond diplomatically to sensitive and critical issues.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task.
