Description:
 
MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Provide academic advisement to resident students
  • Understand requirements for all degree programs offered by SGSC and make appropriate referrals for advising in baccalaureate programs
  • Offer retention support by working to identify students whose behaviors indicate a lack of academic success strategies and refer students for academic skills assistance, including tutoring, counseling, and/or career guidance
  • Promote academic success through educational, wellness, cultural and social programs
  • Monitor progress of and report on academic success initiatives
  • Teach sections of SGSC 1000 (College Orientation and Success) specifically for residential students
  • Participate in new student orientations and other advising events
  • Participate in assessment of advising services
  • Maintain student records and reports
  • Provide referrals to academic, career, and counseling support services
  • Summer camps and conferences administration and coordination (as appropriate)
  • Working evenings and some weekends as necessary to accommodate resident student schedules.
  • Able to work independently and with groups
  • Able to work as a team member and serve on committees
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of BANNER advising/registration system
  • Knowledge of University System of Georgia and Board of Regents policies
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations related to remedial courses
  • Knowledge of student support services
  • Knowledge of general financial aid rules
  • Knowledge of general transfer policies
  • Knowledge of degree audit programs
  • Knowledge of residence life policies and procedures
  • Skill in the provision of advising to residential students
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions
  • High-level skill in oral and written communication
  • Excellent customer service skills

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

Reports to the Director of Academic Success

GUIDELINES:

Guidelines include college policies and procedures, department policies and Board of Regents policy and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of varied administrative duties and coordination of primary functional areas. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position
  • Success in this position contributes to the efficiency, effectiveness, and regulatory compliance of all department operations

CONTACTS:

  • Contacts are typically with students, co-workers, other college personnel and members of the general public
  • Contacts are typically to provide services; to give or exchange information; to resolve problems; to motivate or influence persons; or to justify, defend or negotiate matters

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table, or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending or crouching
  • The employee occasionally lifts light objects
  • The work is typically performed in an office setting / residence hall setting

Required Qualifications:
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years
  • Ability to understand college catalog and help students make appropriate choices of courses for degree completion or transfer
  • Understanding of grade point average calculations and ability to guide students toward increasing GPA
  • Reliable with good time management skills and ability to identify and complete needed tasks
  • Ability to travel between assigned campuses and to work after-hour events as needed
  • Ability to work a schedule that includes evenings and weekends
  • Experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Banner system preferred

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • 2 years’ experience in academic advising and/or academic coaching
