The Payroll Assistant position is part of a customer-focused team responsible for oversight of the University System of Georgia (USG) Shared Services Center’s (SSC) consolidated payroll processing.  This position works under general supervision and focuses on learning USG payroll systems, quality assurance tasks, issue resolutions, assisting with client implementations, and other special projects.  The Payroll Assistant sets schedules, provides reports to management as well as other planning and coordination efforts with the payroll team. This position supports the payroll team which serves as a primary interface between 28 USG institutions, University System Office and third party vendors regarding payroll related issues including: automated time and labor, taxes, garnishments, retirement processing and payroll calculation/confirmation.

Required Qualifications:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Provides administrative support for payroll team and assists with the day-to-day administration issues
  • Processes, supports, and maintains reports related to payroll administration
  • Prepares and coordinates data for audits and legal compliance.
  • Researches institution and employee issues and resolve problems in an effective and timely manner through internal and external interactions
  • Works with payroll and other departments to maintain data integrity and to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing
  • Provides accurate and up-to-date communication materials
  • Facilitates meetings and assist with presentations
  • Works with manager to create tools for payroll
  • Provides output data and reporting upon request
  • Serves as backup to Payroll Team as needed
  • Serves as backup to the SSC Call Center
  • Performs other duties or special projects as assigned

Minimum Requirements

This position requires a bachelor’s degree and one year of payroll administration experience, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the necessary knowledge and skills.

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including sufficient software and computer use knowledge to search computer files, and/or generate standard reports, to input or edit information into spreadsheets or programs, and to perform word processing and/or desktop publishing
  • Excellent research and problem solving skills
  • Solid oral and written communication skills
  • Proven Customer Service Skills
  • Knowledge of Payroll, Federal, and Local tax withholding regulations is preferred
  • Experience with a variety of Payroll software programs is desired

Other Requirements

  • Day and overnight travel from headquarters may be required
  • Occasional overtime will be required
  • Must have a valid GA Driver’s License
  • Light physical exertion may be required
  • Ability to work productively in a Call Center open space environment, with low-wall cubicle desks and  moderate-to-occasional escalated noise levels
