Position Description:           This position will provide technical leadership and management of GVU Center research labs, projects and activities. The position will conduct and enable research initiatives, overseeing the development of any necessary technical infrastructure.  Act as a liaison between GVU Center faculty, staff and students, the CoC Technology Services Organization and other strategic research partners, coordinating technology matters with regard to GVU research business.  Manage the acquisition, policy and deployment of strategic GVU technologies in over 10 related research labs.  Work closely with student lab managers in the technical management of specialized research assets such as audio/video equipment, 3D printers, poster printers, laser etchers and other electronic lab equipment with attention toward accepted best practices, policies and procedures. Manage research related web content on the GVU web server and the web streaming of GVU events. 

An important aspect of the position involves close interactions with vendors and sponsors, performing evaluation of strategic hardware and software components for use in research projects, with end users and other professional staff.  Campus visibility, coordination, communication, negotiation, problem resolution, and excellent customer service, as well as a high degree of individual technical expertise and experience, are also key elements to the success of this position. Supervision of other staff members as well as graduate and undergraduate assistants will be required.

Position Specific Duties and Assigned Effort:

  1. Project planning and technical leadership for the GVU Center:
  • Work with the GVU Center Director and staff to develop technology strategy, policy and procedures
  • Provide primary point of contact to faculty, staff, students for technical matters relating to GVU business.
  • Work with Research Lab Managers in support of strategic research facilities with a focus on meeting GVU goals
  • Support the GVU lab infrastructure (e.g., physical prototyping lab) including equipment support, training, and cost recovery policies.
  • Manage technical problems, requests, projects to assure quick resolution, best practices and excellent customer service.
  • Develop and coordinate technical aspects of research grant proposals.
  • Act as liaison GT/OIT, other GT units and external research partners with regard to research computing capabilities and GVU facilities.
  • Provide bid and proposal costing for strategic technologies


  1. Work with the CoC Technology Support Organization (TSO) Research Program Support Group regarding:
  • Implementation of CoC technical plans, policies and procedures in GVU areas.
  • Conduct and enable computing and network research initiatives, overseeing research and development of the necessary technology and infrastructure.
  • Participate in campus-wide forums for information exchange, planning, and policy regarding campus research technology initiatives and collaborative projects

Minimum qualifications include an BS degree in Computer Science or a closely related field; 2 or more years experience managing technology in a highly distributed, multi-vendor environment supporting research. Must be able to conceptualize immediate and
and future research technologies. Must have ability to prepare research and grant proposals, develop/manage grant budgets, conduct research tasks, make technical presentations, and publish results. Requires specific knowledge and experience of wide-
range of technologies including: MS Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, TCP/IP, network security, HTML, databases (e.g. mySQL), audio equipment (microphones, mixers, etc.), video equipment (cameras, scan converters, etc.), video streaming and encoding, storage
technologies such as RAID, file sharing protocols, backup/restore processes, fluency in multiple programming and scripting languages (e.g. Java, Perl, PHP, etc.). Must have knowledge of physical prototyping equipment, such as 3D printers. Must have
excellent communications skills and ability to make technical presentations, and create technical documentation a strong service orientation, and the ability to work well with other professionals in providing technical solutions in an advanced computing
environment. Must have proven ability to provide leadership, coordination, and assistance of technical personnel. Previous work experience in a college/university environment preferred.
