Job Summary

Savannah State University seeks qualified applicants for Academic Advisor. This position assists students with setting academic goals/addressing academic concerns, course planning, and registration as part of the Center for Academic Success’ advising and mentoring program in support of the university’s Complete College Georgia Plan and other retention, progression and graduation initiatives. Provides holistic advising, early alert intervention and problem-solving to students with or without appointments; assists students with academic planning and advisement for core curriculum requirements on selecting and scheduling courses for the first two years, selecting a major, establishing career goals, and reviewing academic progress; assists students in overcoming barriers to academic success, social, and personal transition into college. Develops and maintains appropriate student files for advising and mentoring; utilizes appropriate technology and campus data systems; provides students with accurate information about Savannah State University programs, procedures and policies. Develops supportive advising and mentoring relationships with students; maintains systematic and regular contact with assigned students. Works collaboratively with other campus departments and services. Employee may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of experience working directly with college students in academic advising/mentoring, academic support or other related student service capacity required. Master’s degree preferred in a relevant field. Strong interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills; flexibility and ability to effectively manage multiple tasks. Excellent customer-service, written and oral communication skills, especially listening skills. Ability to build positive developmental relationships and to monitor, motivate, and assist students; ability to foster positive relationships with faculty, staff and departments throughout the university; and proficient computer skills with a variety of software products. Graduate certification in Academic Advising from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA); or ability to obtain certification within two years of employment. Background and/or credit check may be required.
