Job Summary:  The Assistant Professor of Food and Nutrition will teach undergraduate courses in food and nutrition. In addition to teaching, a primary responsibility of this position will be to coordinate efforts to obtain the Didactic Program in Dietetics (PDP) program to be located in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Fort Valley State University. This is a tenure track; 9-month appointment with the possibility of a joint appointment with either Extension or Research for potential summer employment.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

List the primary job duties and responsibilities

  • Coordinate efforts to obtain the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).
  • Teach courses in food and nutrition and other related courses in family and consumer sciences using traditional and electronic delivery formats.     
  • Recruit, advises and mentor students.
  •  Participate in the continuous assessment of student learning outcomes; Supervise the collection and analysis of data to support program assessment plan.
  • Updates the DPD Student Handbook with input from Family and Consumer Sciences faculty, including policies to ensure fair, equitable, and considerate treatment of prospective and enrolled students (such as program admission, retention, and completion policies).
  • Review the Didactic Program in Dietetics curriculum and assist in maintenance of the accreditation process.
  • Keeps Department Chair informed of all proceedings pertinent to the DPD program and teaching areas
  • Pursue and secure external grant funding.
  • Maintains continuing education to support proficiency in teaching content areas. Demonstrate success in professional and scholarly activities.
  • Assume other task as deemed necessary to achieve program objectives.



  • M.S. degree in Food and Nutrition, family and consumer sciences or closely related fields from an accredited university
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD) credential
  • Evidence of professional preparation in nutrition and dietetics
  • Prefer two years of experience in undergraduate teaching
  • Membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Experience supervising undergraduate students
  • Excellent analytical skills; oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of involvement in professional organizations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • KNOWLEDGE is required to teach in the content areas; knowledge and awareness of professional developments related to areas of expertise.
  • SKILLS are required in utilizing instructional and computer technology. Skills required to operate small and large equipment in a food laboratory and/or food quantity kitchen area
  • ABILITY is required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; ability to read and interpret documents related to meeting PDP Standards; maintaining confidentiality and exhibiting tact and patience.


  • PhD, in Food and Nutrition or related areas; experience supervising undergraduate students; experience in grant writing and obtaining external funding; evidence of experience in working with students of diverse backgrounds.

 Working conditions:

  •      Maintains Registered Dietitian (RD) Credentialing
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to work

Physical requirements:

  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds
  • Adequate vision, hearing and manual dexterity to interact with people in person and in writing
