Senior Research Associate/Director of Animal Program & Facilities; Alternate Veterinarian

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Vice President for Research, the Director of Animal Program & Facilities (Alternate Veterinarian), is responsible for the Program of Animal Program and Facilities at the Institute. 

The Director of Animal Program & Facilities -Alternate Veterinarian (Senior Research Associate) is a Faculty position that will support and lead the Institute’s animal care staff and facilities operations.  This position will pay a critical role in preparing for, and thereafter maintaining, accreditation by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC).  Service on Institute committees, teaching, training and back up veterinary medical duties may also be required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties may include but are not limited to:

Responsibilities include drafting new policies and instituting approved policies and standards to be used in achievement and maintenance of accreditation by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC)

Creation and maintenance of consistent management practices and price structures across all the Institute’s animal facilities;

Containing costs while still providing top tier animal research support.

Oversight of rate studies, approving and planning construction, equipment purchases, facility repairs and upgrades and balancing budgets;

Provide veterinary consultation on IACUC protocols as needed;

Participate in planning construction and equipment purchases;  

Direct supervision of positions including: Laboratory Managers, Finical Managers, and accounting managers.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Degrees required for this job: The incumbent must be a graduate of a college or school of veterinary medicine that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), or possess a certificate from either the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE).

Degrees preferred: Advanced degrees in any area of science involving use of laboratory animals are preferred.

Years of experience required for this job: The incumbent must have 10 years of experience working with animals to include at least 5 years working with laboratory animals.

Certifications (Preferred):

  • License to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Georgia.
  • Practitioner license (or license-eligibility) from the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
  • Accreditation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
  • Completion of residency training in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or board eligibility is preferred.
  • Advanced degrees in any area of science involving use of laboratory animals.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

Specialized skills required for this job:

Excellent writing, communication, organization, prioritization, problem solving, and training skills.

Ability to work diplomatically with many stakeholders.

Must maintain current, thorough knowledge of all aspects of animal facility operations including management, cost setting, laws and regulations and trends in construction and equipment.

Must be skilled at supervision of animal facility personnel and experienced in recruiting and retaining top level talent.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Demonstrated experience in a complex university or research environment

Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
