Job Summary:  The Cooperative Extension Program is seeking a Coordinator to provide leadership for the development and implementation of a Center for Aquaculture research, education and outreach as a component of the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology. The position is a split appointment between Extension (6o%) and Research (40%).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate an Aquaculture Research and Extension Outreach Center with a focus on warm-water fish and shellfish, including marine shrimp
  • Coordinate activities in collaboration with State, Federal, private industry, and Community Based Organizations for outreach efforts
  • Establish an applied research program in aquaculture
  • Provide support to producers; and establish cooperative projects and relationships with other aquaculture scientists, farmers and industry groups
  • Establish and utilize small scale aquaculture/aquaponics recirculating systems for trainings and production research
  • Establish and enhance existing outdoor ponds and greenhouse systems for production research and outreach training
  • Seek support through external funding opportunities for extension and applied research.
  • Supervise assigned staff
  • Perform additional duties as assigned


  • Master of Science Degree in Aquaculture                                                                      
  • Ten (10) years experience in Applied Aquaculture or an appropriately related field/discipline
  • Ability to lead a team to achieve established research and extension goals
  • Knowledge and experience in small scale aquaculture and aquaponics recirculating systems
  • Ability to plan, organize and develop, implement and evaluate technology-related educational programs
  • Evidence of working with others engaged in research and extension programs to support the aquaculture industry
  • Ability to work with small farmers, small and limited resource farmers
  • Ability to work independently

Working conditions:

The standard work hours are from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday-Friday; occasional weekend events/workshops may require work after normal work hours; overnight travel/while attending conferences, workshops, trainings and visits to aquaculture sites.

  • Travel required - Meetings/Conferences and farm visits/tours.
  • Evening/night/weekend work- Required occasionally for scheduled trainings.
  • Working indoors/outdoors at greenhouse/ponds
  • Climate controlled environment, temperature might vary depending on work-site

Physical requirements:

The physical requirements of the job will require standing and sitting for periods of time, lifting minimum and heavy objects, while performing some repetitive tasks, and so forth.
