Job Information

Georgia Regents University seeks an outstanding journalism educator with at least three years’ current or recent full-time experience in digital/multimedia journalism, preferably at a daily newspaper or at a magazine, for a visiting one-year position at the assistant or associate level in the Department of Communications. We anticipate advertising for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor next year; the Ph.D. will be required for that hire. Our goal is to bring the Department to a level of excellence in digital and multimedia journalism teaching and scholarship appropriate for GRU’s new research-level ranking.

The Department seeks an educator with current or recent professional experience that evidences exceptional skills in reporting, editing, and design across multiple digital platforms. The successful candidate also should have a network of professional contacts that will benefit students seeking internships and new graduates and alumni launching careers. The visiting professor will teach a 4-4 load of mostly journalism skills courses in reporting and editing and will advise and teach the award-winning student newspaper and student magazine in practicums in load; and will work with the Communications faculty and Chair to create a curriculum centered on the idea of “digital-first newsgathering and presentation” while upholding traditional values of journalistic excellence and ethics. Experience and expertise in sports journalism or in health communication a plus. Experience with student media preferred.

Evidence of excellence in teaching college journalism required. Some academic advising will be required.

Successful candidates will be skilled at effective communication and experienced in working in an atmosphere of collegiality, accountability, and collaboration. Outstanding writing and speaking skills in English, with expert knowledge of journalistic style, as well as media law and ethics, are a must.

Duties to begin August 10, 2015. Competitive salary, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements

  • MFA in Digital Media or related field; or minimum 18 hours of graduate study in Journalism/Mass Communication; Ph.D. in Journalism/Mass Communication preferred.
  • Record of excellence in digital/multimedia journalism.
  • At least 3 years' recent experience in journalism
