Managing Director Position

The Department of Communication at Georgia State University in Atlanta invites applicants for three positions at the rank of academic professional for implementing a recently expanded television production partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB). Application reviews will start September 15, 2014 and continue until the position is filled, with a goal that the person hired will start sometime in October 2014. Requirements include extensive television production and managerial experience; preference will be given to applicants with experience in university- or public broadcasting-related production environments and to those who have a successful record of grant writing. A graduate degree is preferred.

The three positions’ duties closely connect to implementation of an agreement between GSU and Georgia Public Broadcasting, which makes a GPB digital sub-channel available to the university that will carry statewide educational, arts and cultural affairs events across the GPB broadcast network and its statewide-contracted cable outlets. GSU will provide GPB with 12 hours a day of this programming; statewide partners will submit programming that will be post-produced at GSU, and GSU film crews will tape original content that will be formatted for airing.  Statewide broadcast starts June 1, 2015.

The Managing Director is responsible for coordinating the administrative operations and outreach to university, metro Atlanta and statewide contributors. The position is to be the main liaison with GPB and takes responsibility for assuring the programming delivered will be in compliance with FCC and GPB requirements. The person is responsible for budgeting and budget tracking, maintenance of records, grant reporting and tracking. The Managing Director is responsible for guiding the two full-time staff employees, establishing and implementing personnel policies for staff and the graduate and undergraduate student crews. The position requires strategic planning ability, strong communication skills with an ability to work effectively with a diverse range of constituencies; knowledge of marketing strategies, techniques and processes is a plus. The ideal candidate should have knowledge and understanding of all facets of digital television production operations, methods, facilities and equipment. The Managing Director will develop funded sponsorships, underwriting partners and grant funding streams and should have a comprehensive understanding of fundraising strategies and methods used by non-commercial broadcasters.

Application Procedure:  Applications should include a letter of application and CV, degree transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. An offer of employment will be conditional upon background verification.  Georgia State University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. Women, minorities, and candidates from other traditionally under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
