Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Georgia College Office of Leadership Programs empowers GC students to forge meaningful connections to their communities and world. Through curricular programs, co-curricular experiences, and individual consulting, the staff members of the Office of Leadership Programs work to help students become conscientious and engaged citizens and to serve as leaders for the public good. The Office of Leadership Programs maintains institution-wide responsibility for management, coordination, and development of all Georgia College leadership programs and initiatives.

Primary Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Director of Leadership Programs, the Assistant Director of Leadership Programs will assist the director in advancing the office’s mission within the university and Georgia. He or she will work collaboratively with members of the faculty and staff.

Key Function Program Management
Job duties performed for the above function

The incumbent will maintain functional responsibility for the Emerging Leaders Program for first-year Georgia College students. The assistant director will maintain full responsibility for program recruitment, selection, retention, budgeting, and for providing 1:1 leadership consultations to program participants. The assistant director will likewise be responsible for regular assessment of program goals and objectives and for ensuring the continued integration of the Emerging Leaders Program into the Office’s other curricular and programmatic offerings. The assistant director will lead and support the peer mentors, who provide programming and guidance to the first-year students in the Emerging Leaders Program.

The assistant director will provide professional administrative leadership for the Women’s Leadership Initiative. He or she will draft a comprehensive plan for the development and implementation of the initiative that is representative of the core components of the GC Leadership Programs and the current, national best practices for high performing leadership development. The assistant director will work with other Georgia College units to develop collaborative programs.

Key Function Outreach

The assistant director will welcome visiting leadership programs to the university, including the many county youth leadership programs that visit Georgia College across the academic year and several hundred participants of Georgia HOBY who spend four days on campus during the summer. The assistant director will work with the other members of the Office of Leadership Programs staff to cultivate community relationships with practica mentors and with local chambers of commerce throughout Georgia.

Key Function Teaching/Instructing

The assistant director will maintain instructional responsibilities in the LEAD course sequence for students in the Leadership Certificate Program as well as other teaching or instructional responsibilities as assigned by the director of leadership programs. The assistant director will remain current in the scholarly literature on leadership in theory and practice, civic engagement, social justice and inclusion, mentorship, public-private partnerships, strategic thought, and global citizenship.

All members of the Leadership Programs staff will provide individual 1:1 consultations with students who choose “Intensive Leadership Programs” within the GC Journeys sequence. The assistant director will provide advising and consultation to those students, maintaining the relevant advising and consultation files in accordance with Georgia College and Leadership Programs policy.

The assistant director will be responsible for planning and administering the Inspire! Student Leadership Forum, a speaker series of visiting business and non-profit leaders convened six times annually. He or she will be responsible for gathering performance and success data generated by the Inspire! Forum.

The assistant director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office of Leadership Programs and will assist the director in advancing the office’s mission within the university and Georgia. He or she will supervise administrative staff, student employees, interns, and graduate assistants.

The assistant director will perform other duties as assigned by the director of leadership programs. He or she will participate in staff, committee, and other university meetings as appropriate.

Minimum Requirements
Proposed Minimum Experience/Education

• Earned master’s degree from an accredited institution in an academic discipline offered at Georgia College; 
• A minimum of 2+ years of successful project and program management experience directly related to academic or public-policy programs; 
• Demonstrated strong and effective administrative, supervisory, and management skills; 
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; 
• Ability to interact effectively with a broad range of diverse stakeholders, including faculty members, staff persons, students, parents, alumni, and community partners; and 
• Demonstrated analytical abilities, including the ability to utilize data to inform decision-making.

Department Required Skills

• The incumbent should demonstrate a full understanding of Georgia College’s role as a public liberal arts university. 
• Georgia College is especially interested in candidates with 1:1 consultation experience. 
• Georgia College prefers experience in advanced project management, including Gantt charting, critical-path methodology, and PMBOK.
