Nature of Work

The Assessment Specialist assists the Director of Institutional Effectiveness in supporting the institutional culture of evidence-based assessment and continuous program improvement campus-wide. Enhances all aspects of the evaluation of general education and program-level student learning, ensuring a higher level of consistency in program effectiveness outcomes across all academic programs. Supports assessment needs in Schools and academic and co-curricular departments on the Brunswick campus and Camden Center. Identifies effective assessment tools in support of departmental learning objectives, accreditation needs, and college-wide academic and curricular development. Catalogs assessment information and assessment instruments used at the College for specialized and regional accreditation purposes such as Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Prepares assessment reports and performs statistical analyses for accreditation activities. Some travel is required.

Essential Duties

• Enhances the culture of continual program assessment in all Schools and departments as required for SACSCOC and professional accreditations
• Develops and establishes operating goals, policies, and procedures for campus-wide assessment, as appropriate; recommends, implements, and administers methods and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency
• Supports continuous academic program assessment (curricular and co-curricular activities) and improvement of student learning through consultation, mentoring and hands-on training
• Collaborates with faculty and staff in the development of departmental and program student learning outcomes assessment plans
• Oversees the College plan for academic assessment, determines a common timetable for assessment stages, and advises all academic assessment activities by aiding with the criteria and selection of appropriate instruments
• Coordinates and updates a comprehensive institutional assessment database maintained in the Planning module within Campus Labs’ Compliance Assist
• Maintains a library of assessment methodology and materials for faculty and staff use
• Works to enhance effective information flow between academic programs and administrative offices, and partners with other offices, faculty, and staff to enhance college-wide assessment data collection
• Recommends policies and procedures to improve the College’s assessment program
• Serves as a resource to faculty and staff by providing workshops and seminars on assessment initiatives on the Brunswick campus and Camden Center through the Center for Teaching and Learning
• Serves as ex officio member of the Committee on Academic Assessment (CAA)
• Works with the Accreditation Leadership Committee and SACSCOC accreditation liaison on academic assessment matters as they relate to the maintenance of accreditation
• Maintains and updates the College assessment website as well as the production and dissemination of annual assessment reports
• Assesses the effectiveness of academic programs and support services to determine how their outcomes are supporting institutional goals
• Assists with the administration of external assessment instruments such as the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

Minimum Qualifications and Training

• Master’s degree in a quantitative social science, education or in a related discipline
• At least three years’ professional experience with student learning outcomes assessment in a college setting
• Excellent communication skills working cross-functionally with diverse internal and external constituencies
• Knowledge, training, and experience constructing rubrics and writing measurable learning outcomes
• Demonstrated leadership skills applied to motivation, planning, and assessment as well as training, mentoring and efficiently communicating with faculty and staff
• Must have a valid driver’s license and successfully pass a motor vehicle background check.

Preferred Qualifications and Training

• Doctorate in a teaching discipline or a doctorate in an administrative discipline
• Teaching experience in a college or university
• Experience and understanding of best practices in assessment of learning
• Broad knowledge of SACSCOC accreditation principles and procedures
