In collaboration with The Columbus Ballet, The Department of Continuing and Professional Education at Columbus State University seeks candidates for a dual appointment as the Artistic | Executive Director of The Columbus Ballet and Master Teacher of the Columbus State University Dance Conservatory (Ages 3-Adult).

As the Columbus Ballet’s Artistic | Executive Director, the successful candidate will report to the Board of Directors with responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Providing the overall artistic vision for the Youth/Civic Ballet company, emphasizing classical ballet technique and principles.
  • Producing two annual productions including “The Nutcracker”.
  • Serving as choreographer and/or hiring and supervising choreographers for productions.
  • Coordinating and securing performance locations, and hiring and supervising designers, artisans and production staff; supervising volunteer efforts with the volunteer coordinator.
  • Developing and providing fiscally responsible management of the Ballet’s budget and assets in cooperation with the Board of Directors.
  • Determining and executing marketing and fundraising activities in cooperation with the Board of Directors.
  • Actively seeking out partnerships and performance opportunities with other area and regional arts organizations.
  • Positively representing the Columbus Ballet to the public, including media appearances.

As the Columbus State University Master Teacher (part-time, 19 hours per week), the successful candidate will report to the Director of Continuing & Professional Education with responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Serving as the primary teacher for a non-credit dance program (ages 3 – adult) that provides outreach and primarily ballet educational experiences to students.  This position requires flexible hours with most teaching hours falling in the after-school hours on weekdays/nights and for five hours or more on Saturdays.
  • Recruiting, training, and evaluating instructors.
  • Recruiting and evaluating students, and other associated duties as appropriate.
  • Planning and developing quality classical ballet/modern/jazz/lyrical curriculum to meet the needs of the students and teach students at a variety of levels.
  • Assisting with the vision for marketing the program in order to increase enrollment.
  • Managing and nurturing the artistic development of students, to include master classes and intensives.
  • Coaching advanced and pre-professional students for YAGP and summer intensive auditions.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to fundamentally understand, endorse, and champion the purpose of Youth/Civic ballet and classical ballet education to the community; positively and creatively coach ballet company members (consisting primarily of school-aged youth) in classical ballet performance and technique, with a special focus on encouragement and equal development of both pre-professional and avocational dancers; and hire, supervise, and evaluate artistic personnel including teachers, performers, guest artists and designers.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (MA or MFA in dance, dance education or other appropriate degree is preferred); or an equivalent combination of education and/or professional experience will be considered. The successful candidate will build and sustain positive working relationships with a wide variety of constituents to include the Board of Directors, Columbus State University, donors, volunteers, parents, students and the community; successfully manage a small 501(c)(3)-designated artistic organization, with a focus on artistic growth, increasing Company participation, sound fiscal management, and audience development; possess strong oral and written communication skill; possess strong organizational and problem solving skills; the ability to balance multiple priorities efficiently with excellent time management skills; a demonstrated proficiency in Web navigation, Google products, and MS Office programs, with the ability to learn new software; and a demonstrated proficiency in social media.

The salary is commensurate with education and experience.

A brief description of each piece (including performance company and performance location and date) should accompany the videos. Production stills/videos, programs, and/or reviews from other productions supervised or choreographed by the candidate.
