Research Engineer
Job Description:

A Research Engineer position is available within the Scalable Thermal Energy Engineering Laboratory (STEEL) at the Georgia Institute of Technology under the direction of Prof. Shannon Yee in the G.W.W. School of Mechanical Engineering.

At this time, the Research Engineer will lead a team of three PhD students to develop a new dual stage thermo-electro-chemical heat engine funded by the Dept. of Energy’s SunShot program APOLLO.  This heat engine has the potential of being >40% efficient and contains no moving parts.  This is a revolutionary technology that relies on the isothermal expansion of sodium ions through special ion conducting ceramic operating at high temperature (~1200 K) developed by our industry partner Ceramatec, Inc.  The primary task is the full thermal design of the module and testing of subcomponents on the way to building and operating our first prototype modular heat engine.

The research is centered on thermal management and requires a strong background in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and thermal-fluids.  In addition, electrochemistry experience is useful and experience working with Na liquid and/or vapor at high temperatures is desirable.  This work will be highly collaborative across several research groups, specifically, Prof. Andrei Fedorov and Prof. Seung Woo Lee also at Georgia Tech.

The primary responsibility for this Research Engineer is being the project lead for this SunShot project, which includes labwork, mentoring, and directing the day-to-day activities of the team.  Responsibilities also include carrying out collaborative laboratory research, creating presentations and reports, and interfacing with DOE sponsors.  Highly motivated and hardworking candidates with a strong background in heat transfer are strongly encouraged to apply immediately.

Application Procedure:  Please send a CV, representative publications, a short one-paragraph (5-10 sentences) description of career goals, as well as contact information for three references to Shannon Yee (shannon.yee@me.gatech.edu).  Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.  Anticipated start-date is late fall 2015 or January 2016.
