Job Description Summary

This position is responsible for assisting in directing and managing the college’s accounting services functions.

Major Duties

Duties are assigned based upon the education and experience of the employee. Duties may include working in the BANNER student information system and the PeopleSoft accounting system in the areas of cash management, student accounts, continuous audit, accounts receivable, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, asset management, budget preparation and financial reporting, internal control and general ledger accounting and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Required by the Position

• Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
• Knowledge of college operations, finance, business, and budgeting
• Knowledge of accounting and internal control procedures and standards
• Knowledge of Board of Regents policies and procedures
• Knowledge of job related financial software programs
• Skill to make timely decisions
• Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs
• Skill in decision making and problem solving
• Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public
• Skill in oral and written communication

Supervisory Controls

The Accounting Manager assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.


Guidelines include Board of Regents rules and regulations, state and federal regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

Complexity/Scope of Work  

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, vendors, elected and appointed officials, representatives of other colleges and universities, alumni, business and community leaders, bankers, and members of the general public.

• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to motivate or influence persons, or to justify, defend or settle matters.

Physical Demands

• The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table.

• The work is typically performed in an office.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility  
Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.

• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand basic accounting principles and perform duties with minimum supervision, usually associated with one year experience or service.
