Under the general supervision of the Director of Financial Aid, the Senior Financial Aid Counselor provides a high level of customer service to students and institutional partners. The Senior Financial Aid Counselor will have a primary responsibility of responding to inquiries and appeals regarding financial assistance and informing and advising students and campus partners about financial aid eligibility,
application procedures, costs and financial policies, individualizing information to the particular needs and situation of the student. The incumbent will make initial evaluations of financial need and eligibility from a variety of sources including institutional guidelines, enrollment data, documentation and personal interviews to recommend financial aid distribution. Additionally, the person will also serve as the liaison with Student Account's Office, fostering the highest level of communication between staff in both offices and will respond to reporting requests from other staff regarding financial aid. This position also plays a vital role in recruitment and outreach for the institution, including coordinating and attending outreach events and ensuring materials are readily available for new and continuing students  

Training and Experience:


Bachelor's degree required, preferably with course work in higher education, finance, and/or a business discipline.
At least one (1) year of professional financial aid experience, or relevant work experience in a higher educational environment required (customer service experience in higher education preferred).
Knowledge of Banner, COD and NSLDS required.
Possess high ethical and professional standards.
Excellent organizational skills, a high level of attention to detail, and an ability to work in a dynamic work environment, meet deadlines and accommodate a variety of counseling needs.
Demonstrated ability to provide presentations to small and large groups.
Effective communication skills (oral and written) and the ability to explain complex ideas and systems to students and parents with a wide variety of needs.
Demonstrated mathematical agility.
Experience with online student information systems and personal computers required.
Strong interpersonal skills required.
Ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality of information.

Provide excellent customer service by phone, in writing, or in person, counseling students and college partners about financial aid eligibility, application procedures, application processing, costs and financial planning; individualizing information to the needs and situations of particular students.
Perform complex financial aid processes such as: determining student aid eligibility, packaging and awarding, accommodating for overlapping academic and loan periods, and disbursing loan funds, while maintaining accurate financial aid documentation to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations.
Analyze/evaluate eligibility and use professional and fact-based judgment to recommend awards and/or adjustments to student financial aid packages.
Monitor ASU aid expenditures and aid recipients' Satisfactory Academic Progress according to policy.
Assist with the management of electronic processing, originating, and transmitting records to COD, through the use of EdConnect and Banner Software.
Assist in the development and improvement of various financial aid processes, including preparation of Student Financial Aid publications, policies, manuals and forms.
Perform outreach duties; Coordinate and execute Financial Aid workshops on campus and at local high schools, as well as various student recruitment functions, financial aid information sessions, and orientation programs.
Represent Albany State University at off-campus workshops, department meetings, and travel to in-state and out of state conferences.
Perform other job-related duties as required.
