Position Description
Job Description:

GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY: Robinson College of Business, Department of Risk Management & Insurance, Atlanta, GA.

GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY invites applications for one tenure track appointment in actuarial science effective Fall 2020 in the Department of Risk Management and Insurance at the Robinson College of Business.

Candidates must have a completed Ph.D. by the time of appointment in actuarial science or a related field such as statistics, risk management or applied mathematics. Candidates should have the capability to publish in top actuarial, risk management, statistics/econometrics, economics, finance, and/or applied mathematics journals in the broad area of actuarial science. For all candidates, an actuarial credential from any of the major professional societies is required; a candidate that does not already have an actuarial credential should be on track to obtaining one soon after appointment. We are interested in intellectually curious candidates with versatility in their research and teaching interests. An ideal candidate would conduct research using insurance data and/or analyze empirical insurance problems using cutting-edge quantitative methods (which could include machine learning or big data techniques). Candidates should be knowledgeable about insurance markets and institutions.  An interest in novel insurance technology (InsurTech) or actuarial analytics is particularly welcome.

Georgia State University is a leading urban research university located in the heart of Atlanta, one of the largest and most diverse metropolitan areas in the southeastern United States.  GSU is ranked as the #2 most innovative university in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. With more than 7,500 students and 200 faculty members, the Robinson College of Business is one of the largest and most diverse business schools in the country.

The Department of Risk Management and Insurance at Georgia State University is one of the oldest and most influential risk management programs in the U.S. and has a distinguished history of serving students, alumni, and the risk management profession for more than 60 years. We are currently rated #3 in the U.S. News and World Report ranking of RMI programs; we hold a Center of Actuarial Excellence designation from the Society of Actuaries; and we are an Accredited Risk Program according to the Professional Risk Management International Association (PRMIA).

The mission of the department is to better understand how risks faced by individuals, institutions, and societies can be more accurately measured and more efficiently managed. The department has both undergraduate and graduate actuarial science programs as well as an active PhD program.  Our actuarial group is active and visible: for example, we hosted the Congress on Insurance: Mathematics and Economics in 2016 and the Actuarial Research Conference in 2017.

RMI faculty engage with colleagues in other units of the College and University and members of the business community in a variety of professional activities to form an involved community of scholars that make important contributions to business education and practice. In particular, RCB’s newly created Institute for Insight, which is focused on technology and data science, as well as other units such as Institute of Health Administration provide exciting collaborative opportunities.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct research and teaching in risk related topics. The salary level and course load for this position are competitive.

Positions are contingent on budget approval. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

To apply, a letter of application, curriculum vitae, recommendation letters, and sample publications or working papers should be uploaded to Academicjobsonline.org.  If they wish, candidates may also submit evidence of teaching effectiveness, statements of teaching philosophy, or research statements. All materials must be submitted in Adobe PDF. Please note in your cover letter that you are applying for the tenure-track position in actuarial science. Should you be recommended for a position, an offer of employment will be conditional on background verification.
