Job Summary

The Department of Fine Arts, Humanities and Wellness at Savannah State University invites applications for Accompanist.

The successful candidate will:
• Assist instructors by providing piano accompaniment for the applied music curriculum, choral groups, dance and voice classes, stage productions, rehearsals and/or special events as well as conduct individual rehearsals with students in preparation for performances.
• Teach up to two (2) courses per semester.
• Lead choral, stage productions and sectional rehearsals at the direction of Instructors.
• Accompany groups or soloists performing in programs on and off campus.
• Prepare accompaniment recordings for student practices.
• Provide accompaniment for various musical genres which include but are not limited to classical, folk, modern, popular and theater.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
• Perform other duties not specifically delineated in this summary.

The successful candidate should be able to sight read, understand and follow oral and visual directions/demonstrations from a conductor and dance instructor. The Accompanist is required to maintain and post a schedule as well as attend departmental functions.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in music or piano.
• Documented experience as an accompanist and/or performer.
• Demonstrated knowledge of music theory including fundamentals for musical periods and styles.
• Knowledge of historical performance practices and styles related to piano technique.
• Knowledge of terminology relating to ballet, jazz and modern dance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in music or piano.
