Log #21-013

The Department of Middle and Secondary Education in the College of Education and Human Development at Georgia State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor, tenure track, in Teaching and Learning World Languages with a focus on urban K-12 underserved populations. Georgia State University, founded in 1913, is classified as a RU/H (Research University/High Research Activity) with a mission of excellence in teaching, research and service. We are located in the heart of downtown Atlanta with a diverse student and faculty body.

Position Description:  Primary responsibilities include conducting research, publishing research and scholarship, seeking external funding to support research, and teaching courses in the department’s World Language Teacher Certification Program and supporting the work of our Center for Transnational and Multilingual Education (CTME).  Additional responsibilities include mentoring doctoral students; advising undergraduate and graduate students; serving on departmental, college and university committees and in participating in professional organizations and conferences.

Qualifications:  The successful applicant will have an earned doctorate in Language Education—or closely related field—with expertise in the area of world language education and preferably with knowledge of dual language immersion, and/or English as an additional language. We are looking for evidence of scholarly work that demonstrates a commitment to critical sociocultural perspectives in working with bi/multicultural and multilingual populations. To meet the state’s expanding need for world language teachers, we are particularly interested in those candidates with a commitment to pre and in-service teacher recruitment and development and with experience in teaching in K-12 multilingual settings. The interested applicant should be fluent in language(s) other than English, preferably Spanish, with an interest in immigrant community activist-oriented work in schools and communities.

Department of Middle and Secondary Education:  Our acclaimed diverse faculty, among the leading researchers and teachers in their fields, come from countries around the world and are committed to bettering the human condition. Our mission is to engage in research, teaching and service in urban environments with people from multiple cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. We work collaboratively with stakeholders in schools, communities and organizations in Atlanta and around the world. We are committed to innovation and creativity and to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and practice. We strive to realize our vision of pluralism, equity and social justice where individuals have equal access to meaningful learning opportunities throughout their lives and the chance to apply their knowledge and skills for the greater good.
