The Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education in the College of Education and Human Development at Georgia State University, a Research I institution, is seeking a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in reading education and a focus on biliteracy.

Georgia State University is located in downtown Atlanta, the capital and largest city in the state of Georgia. The birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, Atlanta is the home to an increasing number of immigrants and refugees from around the world. The U.S. city with the second fastest growing foreign-born population, it is also home to an increasing number of schools with dual language immersion programs. The successful candidate will be well prepared to serve the students of Atlanta’s linguistically rich communities and the teachers dedicated to their development as readers.

Responsibilities:  The faculty member is expected to maintain an active portfolio of research, scholarship, teaching, and service efforts.  Primary scholarly responsibilities include having an active and productive research agenda, including publications of research and scholarly work and participation in professional organizations. Primary instructional responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate teacher education courses in reading methods for both monolingual and bilingual educators, in addition to mentoring graduate students. Course instruction that takes place at local partner schools and community sites is encouraged. Additional responsibilities include advising graduate students and serving on departmental, college, and university committees.  


  • an earned doctorate in reading education, language and literacy education, biliteracies, or closely related field;
  • experience in teacher development as related to teaching reading to language minority students;
  • proficiency in Spanish;
  • demonstrated potential for maintaining an active research and publication agenda;
  • experience in and commitment to working with P-5 students in culturally and linguistically diverse populations including African American populations;
  • ability to work independently and as a member of a collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • experience in working with and demonstrated commitment to the families and communities of bilingual students;
  • experience in working with and demonstrated commitment to university/K-12 school partnerships.
