The Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Arts and Humanities invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of Linguistics and English as a Second Language (ESL). This position is located on the Statesboro campus, but may require teaching on the other campuses.

Within this setting, the Department of Writing and Linguistics offers a B.A. degree in Writing with coursework in four areas: applied linguistics/linguistics, creative writing, professional and technical writing, and writing studies. In addition to the major, the Department also offers an online graduate certificate in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, and minors in applied linguistics, linguistics, professional and technical writing, and writing. The Department is an active participant in the online Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program housed in the College of Arts and Humanities, and the interdisciplinary MA and online graduate certificate in Professional Communication and Leadership. The Department also houses the First-Year Writing program and an ESL program that offers support for international and multilingual students in their academic pursuit at Georgia Southern University.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Writing and Linguistics, the Assistant Professor of Linguistics and ESL will provide teaching (both online and face-to-face classes), research, and service. The ideal candidate will help to develop the undergraduate interdisciplinary concentration in Applied Linguistics and the online graduate certificate in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, in addition to providing support for other Department programs and activities (which may include ESL and First-Year Writing). The position is a ten-month tenure-track appointment teaching three courses per term (six courses per year), and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Summer teaching is available but not guaranteed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned Ph.D. (or equivalent terminal degree) in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or a closely related area, by August 1, 2019.
  • Evidence of initial scholarly achievement and a clearly articulated research agenda in the area of TESOL/Applied Linguistics.
  • At least one year of part-time college-level teaching experience (may include graduate assistant teaching experience).
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of demonstrated excellence in and/or one or more years of full-time experience in teaching TESOL/Applied Linguistics courses.
  • Experience teaching English outside of the United States.
  • A strong record of scholarship as indicated by peer-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations in the area of TESOL/applied linguistics.
  • Experience developing online TESOL/Applied Linguistics courses and programs.
  • Interest in teaching and developing courses in sociolinguistics, applied phonology, world Englishes, computer-assisted language learning or language assessment.
