Writing Communication Support:

  1. Provide writing instruction for senior design. This includes:
  • Creating resources to help students [and advisors and clients] understand expectations for pre-proposals, interim reports, and final reports;
  • Tutoring students on pre-proposals, interim reports, final reports, and posters;
  • Commenting on/grading pre-proposals, interim reports, and final reports; and
  • Developing and holding workshops on writing, posters, and poster presentations.
  1. Provide leadership in the development and delivery of a school writing program that helps meet the needs of students and faculty. This will require an initial learning period to gain a good understanding of student and faculty writing needs and then working with the academic office and the school leadership to prioritize changes to the school ‘s writing program. Examples of potential activities in the ISyE writing program include:
  • Developing courses focused on the principles of business/professional/technical writing, grammar and style, graduate academic writing, etc.
  • Teaching or co-teaching undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Teaching a standalone graduate course on written engineering communication that can also be used to train graduate teaching assistants (GTAs).
  • Creating resources to help students with professional writing, a written engineering communication guide for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Creating video content on writing for distance learning or flipped classes.
  1. Tutor students on other professional and technical documents, including career documents, fellowship applications, articles, etc.
  2. Periodically guest lecture on writing in other undergraduate and graduate IE courses as requested.
  3. Periodically develop and offer writing workshops to both students and faculty.
  4. Provide editorial assistance on accreditation and assessment reports for ISYE.
  5. Partner with various campus constituencies on programming involving writing.

Academic Office Support:

  1. Hire and manage the ISYE Studio Assistants (who oversee student activity in the ISYE Studio, poster printing for faculty and students, and digital screen content).
  2. Organize and run Mission Possible, ISYE's summer enrichment camp for 9-12th graders. Duties include:
  • Coordinating with CEISMC (GT's PreK-12 outreach), alumni, and industry partners;
  • Updating applications and surveys;
  • Choosing participants; and
  • Scheduling activities, field trips, and facilitators.
  1. Participate in institute-wide educational initiatives as needed.

Research is not a requirement, but professional development is encouraged. Other duties may be assigned from time to time by the School Chair and Director of Student Services.


PhD degree required in English or related field. Demonstrated experience in teaching, tutoring, and working with engineering students is required, as is thorough knowledge of business/professional/technical communication conventions. Experience managing student workers is a plus.
