MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Prepares the annual financial report.
  • Prepares the annual budgetary compliance report.
  • Responsible for assisting in preparation of annual budget.
  • Reviews general ledger asset and liability account reconciliations; identifies corrective actions as necessary.
  • Reviews the monthly cost of goods sold entry for the college bookstore; makes reconciliations as necessary.
  • Reviews and approves journal entries.
  • Reviews and approves bank reconciliations.
  • Assists with maintenance of business office policies and procedures.
  • Monitors, updates and maintains internal control procedures.
  • Serves as primary contact for procedural and financial audit engagements.
  • Oversight of grants accounting.
  • Oversight of cash management.
  • Prepares and creates reports and spreadsheets as requested by Management.
  • Check and research data anomalies in PeopleSoft Financials and Human Resource Management System.
  • Develop and coordinate information for SGSC and University System committees.
  • Assist in monitoring and amendment of the budget to reflect the changing financial conditions. 
  • Develop information for routine reporting and specific inquiries of the Board of Regents.
  • Periodically review data for accuracy and changes in financial position, especially to identify where actual data differs from expectations.
  • Develop or request reports or queries to project SGSC's remaining balances for budgetary purposes.
  • Communicate with Management changes in the actual or budgeted position with emphasis on the impact on the college's funding.
  • Assist in development of budget procedures, calendars and forms to accomplish the tasks related to budget management.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Senior Accountant must have a strong understanding of all functions of the accounting process including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll as well as the procurement process.  Also, Senior Accountant should have excellent communication skills to facilitate cooperation between reporting staff members.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

The Senior Accountant reports to the Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and Administration.

GUIDELINES:

Guidelines include college policies and procedures, department policies and Board of Regents policy and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of varied administrative duties and coordination of primary functional areas. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position
  • Success in this position contributes to the efficiency, effectiveness, and regulatory compliance of all department operations

CONTACTS:

  • The majority of personal contacts are with individuals or groups from within and outside the organization in a moderately unstructured setting or involve attempts to enforce ordinances, regulations, or rules where conflict or diverse interpretations may result.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table, or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending or crouching

  • The employee occasionally lifts light objects
  • The work is typically performed in an office setting

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:

  • The work consists of varied administrative and accounting related duties. 
  • Strict regulations and responsibilities related to department systems and applications contribute to the complexity of the position
Required Qualifications:
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Accounting along with three to five years of experience in academic or business finance are required.
Desired Qualifications:
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPA or CGFM preferred.
  • Master’s degree in business field preferred.
