Job Description Summary

Student Affairs Communication Specialist I – will be part of the Point of Contact “team”. The primary role of the Communication Specialist is to respond to initial requests for assistance form the student, parent, faculty, staff, and general public. This request for assistance may take the form of personal interaction, phone assistance, email assistance or real-time communication with customers via online chat mechanisms. Additionally, the Communication Specialist will direct requests for assistance to the appropriate point of attention when the request for assistance cannot immediately be met. These individuals will share in the responsibility of documentation collection and routing.

Major Duties

• Point of Contact for requests for assistance from students, parents, faculty, staff, and general public
• Facilitate requests for assistance through contact made via: in-person, phone, email, and electronic communications.
• Monitor and maintain Ask A…email system.
• Collect and appropriately disseminate documentation needs to appropriate location.
• Maintains the Information Display monitors in the Student Affairs area.
• Enters and verifies student information.
• Responsible for training student workers.
• Keep student log for walk-ins.
• Assist students with online forms.
• Support areas of Admissions, Financial Aid, Records, and Student Life as needed and directed.

Knowledge Required by the Position

• General knowledge of Admissions, Financial Aid and Registrar’s Office
• Knowledge of federal, state and institutional policies and procedures related to financial aid.
• Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
• Skill in the provision of customer services.
• Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
• Skill in oral and written communication.

Supervisory Controls

Enrollment Management Lead Counselor supervises and reviews work through observation for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.


Guidelines include the East Georgia State College Employee Handbook, state and federal regulations, the Higher Education Opportunity Act, The Official Code of Georgia, Institutional Catalog, Student Affairs policies and Board of Regents policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

Complexity/Scope of Work

• Frequent regulation changes along with the diverse backgrounds and situations presented by applicants contribute to the complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is to provide customer service support for East Georgia State College. Success in this position contributes to the efficient delivery of services of EGSC customers.


• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, students, parents, high school counselors, and member of the general public.
• Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, to resolve problem, or to motivate or influence persons.

Physical Demands

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects. The work is typically performed in an office.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility


Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of level of competency commonly associated with the completion of an associate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship of having had a similar position for one year.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
