TITLE: Senior Research Associate


Leadership of External Partnerships and Engagements

Drives and represents smart cities research partnerships between Georgia Tech and external partners at the local, national, and international level (specifically through smart cities research networks such as MetroLab Network and Rockefeller 100 Resilient Cities, etc…)

Seeks grant opportunities from philanthropies and foundations and corporate gifts to secure resources to support smart cities urban innovation research.

IMPACT & INFLUENCE: This position will interact on a consistent basis with: corporate and civic external partners , academic and research faculty, co-workers. This position typically will advise and counsel: external partners, academic and research faculty, co-workers. This position will supervise: undergraduate, graduate students, research technicians.


Duties may include but are not limited to: External Coordination: Initiates and manages external engagement with the City of Atlanta’s key offices engaged with smart cities and urban innovation research through the MetroLab Network partnership including SMARTATL, AIM, the Office of Sustainability, the Office of Performance Management and Innovation, and the Office of Planning, as well as City of Atlanta leadership.

Coordinates the implementation of the Georgia Tech Smart Cities Strategic Plan (currently in development by the Georgia Tech Smart Cities Faculty Council and inclusive of the Data Center project)

Coordinates with leadership of the Atlanta Committee for Progress on Georgia Tech’s role in the implementation of smart cities initiatives (as defined by GT leadership and the GT Smart Cities Strategic Plan)

Seeks grant opportunities from philanthropies and foundations and corporate gifts (in coordination with GT Foundation Relations) to secure resources required to support smart cities/urban innovation research and projects Initiates and coordinates with Atlanta smart cities regional stakeholders beyond the City of Atlanta including (but not limited to): the Atlanta Regional Commission (the MPO), the Atlanta Beltline INC, Invest Atlanta, and the Westside Futures Fund. Represent Georgia Tech’s smart cities research projects and capacities to external audiences

Identify potential industry partnerships Internal Coordination Leads internal coordination and daily operations of implementation of the Georgia Tech Smart Cities Strategic Plan including coordination with: • IPaT and the Center for Urban Innovation • GT Office of Government and Community Relations • Office of Industry Relations • Office of Foundation Relations • The Enterprise Innovation Institute (as appropriate)


Degrees required for this job: Master in Public Policy, or cognate disciplines.

Years of experience required for this job: Five years of job related experience.

Years preferred: Six to ten years of job related experience

SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Specialized skills required for this job: Working knowledge of research design in technology-focused social sciences particularly in the context of cities, work, and innovative solutions. Experience in a writing grant applications. Ethnographic research experience, particularly in the area of multi-cultural urban settings and/or community development Specialized skills preferred: Experience in writing successful grant applications
