Job Information

The GRU Cancer Center is in the process of developing an Immune Monitoring Core that will be dedicated to providing laboratory services and translational research to support immune monitoring during cancer therapy clinical trials. Robust immune monitoring assays are essential for characterizing the immune status in patients receiving immune modulating therapies, which may in turn transition promising therapies from the clinical trial phase to standard of care. This is a senior, non-faculty appointment that will have a supervisory role. The candidate should have a minimum of a MSc. or related degree and/or 2-3 years’ experience in the field of immune monitoring. The position requires a diverse set of technical skills and interaction with several other Cancer Center cores notably; flow cytometry, genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics/biostatistics.



  • Development and implementation of state-of-the-art immune-monitoring assays, including multiplex flow cytometry for immune- subset markers, intracellular cytokine staining; phospho- specific flow cytometry; ELISA assays; ELISPOT; quantitative RT- PCR; Luminex assays
  • Data analysis, data interpretation, and data management of all assays, including analysis of large datasets from multiplex flow cytometry and microarrays
  • Quality-control; preparation and documentation of Standard Operating Procedures; and maintenance of GLP-level standards and documentation (or their equivalent, as required by each trial)
  • Management of all regulatory and compliance documentation required for the core facility (biohazard, GMP, etc.)
  • Management of the financial operation of the unit, including pricing assessment, charging, billing and proper bookkeeping.
  • Preparation of samples for transcriptional profiling, proteomic analysis and DNA sequencing by the respective Cancer Center core facilities (including extraction, cryopreservation, banking)
  • Development of specialized new assays to meet the needs of cutting-edge clinical trials
  • Work closely and effectively with clinical investigators (trial PI’s) in the early stages of clinical trial development to design and select optimal immune monitoring strategies; define immunologic endpoints; conduct monitoring for the clinical trials; analyze resulting data; and prepare manuscripts for publication.
  • Maintain a biorepositoy of clinical samples.


  • Work closely and effectively with each of the core-facility Directors of the Cancer Center service core facilities, which will provide key services used by the clinical Immune Monitoring Core (this includes the Cancer Center Flow Cytometry Core, the Genomics Core and the Proteomics Core)
  • Work closely and effectively with the Cancer Center Clinical Trials office to ensure smooth collection, logging and processing of samples intended for the Immune Monitoring Core
  • Work closely and effectively with the with the Department of Pathology special histopathology laboratory to coordinate and compare the analysis of peripheral biomarkers with immunohistochemistry of tumor-infiltrating immune cells
  • Hiring, supervising, and providing oversight of technical staff working within the IMC facility
  • Preparation of reports and documentation for Cancer Center Administration
  • Preparation of text and documentation describing the capabilities and achievements of the Immune Monitoring Core, for use in grant proposals, NCI Cancer Center designation, etc.
  • Active participation in national forums (meetings, professional societies, etc.) for immune monitoring core facility directors, both to ensure cutting-edge  performance and to enhance the reputation of the GRU core facility at the national level
  • Other tasks that would be determined by the Director of the Cancer Center to be important for the performance of the position

Other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

Msc. or equivalent from an accredited university, at least 5 years relevant experience in an immune monitoring facility.
