Primary Function of Organizational Unit

Counseling Services provides voluntary, confidential and free professional counseling to enrolled students for a wide range of issues, including:

Personal Issues: A whole array of individual concerns, such as relationship issues, anxiety, depression, trauma, adjustment to college and health problems.

Career Choice: Deciding on a major and a career field

Academic Skills: Time management, study skills, test-taking, test anxiety

We also provide:

Psychiatric Services: Short term medication management.

Alcohol and Other Drug Education: Learning more about alcohol and other drugs, screening and referral for treatment if needed

Referral: Assistance in locating additional sources of help, both on and off campus

Consultation: We consult with students, faculty, staff and concerned family members about problems students might be having. While we cannot discuss any specific client’s information, we are happy to suggest ways of addressing certain kinds of behavior or help facilitate a referral to our office or to some other service.

Primary Purpose of Position

In collaboration with psychiatrist, the psychiatric nurse provides psychiatric treatment for selected students being seen in GCSU Counseling Services.

Under the supervision of a psychiatrist, assesses, diagnoses, and manages treatment of selected students who present to GCSU Counseling Services. Performs case management functions, such as assisting psychiatrist in referral of patients to providers in the community, and monitoring and documenting transfer of care. Participates in quality care review, including a meeting with the consulting psychiatrist at specified intervals. Collaborates with counselors, psychologists, and other counseling center staff to discuss quality improvement and patient care issues.

Provides consultation to University faculty, staff, students and student families when indicated (and within the legal and ethical boundaries of release of information) in the care of students.

Minimum Requirements
Proposed Minimum Experience/Education

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) which includes a minimum of two (2) graduate courses in psychiatric/mental health nursing, supervised practice for each of the two (2) graduate courses, and evidence of advanced pharmacology within the curriculum or as a separate course.; AND 1-3 years of related experience

Department Required Skills

Adequate computer skills to adapt to online medical charting.

Must hold (1) a current Georgia License as a Registered Nurse and (2) Board Certification as Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health (PMHCNS-BC) or Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC)
