Job Title:   Associate Professor/Professor; Director of Essentials of Clinical Medicine

 Location:   GRU/UGA Medical Partnership Campus, Athens, GA, Georgia Regents University. This position is located in Athens, GA.

Background: The Georgia Regents University (GRU) and the University of Georgia (UGA) partnered in 2008 to create a four-year medical education program in Athens, GA to help alleviate a statewide shortage of physicians. The GRU/UGA Medical Partnership combines the significant instructional and research resources of UGA, the state's flagship land-grant research university, with the expertise of GRU-MCG, Georgia's public medical school.  Students study basic and clinical science in a highly integrated, systems-based, hybrid curriculum that incorporates active learning strategies into interactive large and small group settings. The Essentials of Clinical Medicine (ECM) Course which includes the education in the clinical skills, evidence based clinical decision making, population health, professionalism, medical ethics and other associated topics is integrated with the traditional science based education. The successful candidate will join a cadre of enthusiastic and innovative educators who have created a collaborative environment for developing, implementing, and teaching a uniquely integrated curriculum.

General Description: The GRU/UGA Medical Partnership seeks an experienced educator with experience in teaching clinical skills, participating in a ‘doctoring course’ at a U.S. medical or osteopathic school, and has experience in developing curriculum. The successful candidate should have a track record of teaching excellence, educational leadership, organizational talent, and skills working with and developing faculty. Specific responsibilities will be the overall supervision of the two year ECM course working with and answering to the Campus Associate Dean for Curriculum to integrate this ‘doctoring course’ into the overall curriculum. The Director will participate in teaching clinical skills and in other areas of the ECM course, be a facilitator for the case-based small group learning sessions, continue their personal scholarship, and participate in patient care. The Director will also work collaboratively with colleagues on the GRU-MCG Augusta campus to assure comparability of the curricula and coverage of the MCG competencies and all LCME requirements.

Candidates will have the opportunity for appointments in the appropriate departments at both the Georgia Regents University and the University of Georgia. 

Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Minimum Requirements:  

These include a doctorate degree (MD or DO), ABMS certification in area of chosen specialty, significant experience teaching medical students and/or residents, (and at least 3 years of experience in educational administration at medical student or resident level.) Passion for and expertise in minimally one academic area of ECM which might be clinical skills, medical ethics, professionalism, population or community health, and cultural competency.

Preferred qualifications: These include having leadership responsibility for a specific area of curriculum within a ‘doctoring course’ and demonstrated scholarship in medical education. Preference will also be given to those with a proven record of teaching excellence, of curricular innovation, and a Master’s degree in Public Health, Medical Education, or a related field. Evidence of teaching excellence and experience with case-based and active learning methods in both small and large group settings is highly desirable.
