Job Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine (www.vet.uga.edu) invites applications for a Wildlife Pathologist with the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS), Department of Population Health, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia (UGA; www.uga.edu), a land grant/sea grant institution located 75 miles northeast of Atlanta.
This position is in the Public Service track at UGA and is responsible for overseeing the SCWDS Diagnostic Services Section. This entails complete post mortem examination of wildlife and ancillary diagnostic testing during disease investigations and surveillance activities. The Wildlife Pathologist will provide leadership, supervision, and training to SCWDS personnel and graduate students conducting diagnostic, surveillance, and research activities related to wildlife diseases. The Wildlife Pathologist will consult with wildlife, animal agriculture, and public health agency personnel regarding wildlife disease prevention, detection, and management, and will assist in coordinating and conducting disease workshops and training sessions for state/federal wildlife and agriculture agency personnel. This is a non-tenure track faculty position supported entirely by extramural funds. The Wildlife Pathologist is expected to assist in maintaining existing extramural funding, and be involved in obtaining additional support. Travel assignments are anticipated; however, the majority of work will be based in Athens, Georgia. The Wildlife Pathologist will be representing SCWDS to cooperating state and federal agencies and others, thus a high standard of professionalism is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have a DVM or equivalent degree and show a demonstrated commitment to wildlife population health as evidenced by one year or more of experience and/or education in wildlife biology/management, epidemiology, microbiology, pathology, ecology or other related disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years’ previous work experience with wildlife management agencies in the field of wildlife health is highly desirable. Preference will be given to applicants that are board certified (or board eligible) by the American or European Colleges of Veterinary Pathologists.
